Make-It Monday and Happy Birthday, Barbie!

Today is Barbie's 50th birthday. She's looking pretty good for an old gal, isn't she? So, in honor of her birthday and the fact that it's Make-It Monday, I present for your enjoyment her best friend, Midge, wearing a hand-knit coat:

This coat is the only thing I've knitted. Quite a project for a young beginner -- I was probably about 10 or 11 years old at the time. I remember crying a lot while struggling to make this coat. This original version of Midge -- made in 1963 which makes her a young 46-- still wears, under the knitted coat, the two-piece bathing suit she came with as I didn't have much use for dolls as a child.
Here is Midge's sweet face. Gotta love those freckles!

And some info from Wikipedia about Midge:

Midge Hadley is a fictional doll character in the Barbie line of toys by Mattel that was first released in 1963.Midge was created, along with Skipper, to counteract criticism that claimed Barbie was a sex symbol. She was marketed as Barbie's best friend. No Midge dolls were sold for the rest of the vintage ears after the 1960s.

So, just how was Midge supposed to counteract the fact that Barbie was a sex symbol? She's built exactly as Barbie so the body's not the reason. Do sex symbols NOT have best friends? Or best friends with freckles? Or cute, flipped hair? Hmmmm...........

Square Root Day Aftermath

Did you remember to celebrate Square Root Day?

Here's the Square Root Dinner we enjoyed last night. Potatoes, both sweet and white, carrot and onion. I forgot the turmeric which is also a root. When purchasing the roots at Safeway I told the checker, "Happy Square Root Day!" She replied, "Are you a math teacher? Is that like Pi Day? All the kids come in and buy pies on Pi Day." I told her that Square Root Day was a bigger event because it only happens nine times a century, whereas Pi Day happens every year. But given the food choices for the two days, the kids probably don't want their parents knowing about Square Root Day. Nonetheless, the checker was glad I told her because she just likes to celebrate.

When talking with Middle Daughter later in the evening we figured out how many more Square Root Days we could celebrate. I figured I'm good for four more at the most and she left me a note this morning that she could have maybe six more. Well, we'll see. In the meantime, Dear Husband is looking forward to Pi Day!

Square Root Day

Today is 3-3-9 -----Happy Square Root Day! It's that number thing again.
And Happy Birthday, Dad.

Am thinking about having potatoes and carrots for dinner. Cut into -- what else --squares!
So I can have a square root dinner.

Make-It Monday

This week's card challenge was to make a card without a sentiment or greeting. The first card above is the one I made for the challenge. It has ribbon, snaps, and some Japanese characters. The other two cards are just some random note cards

Phone Hell

Have you ever been put on hold while on a phone call? You know the kind. "If you would like customer service, please press 2." You press 2 and then wait........and wait...........and wait. Well, I think I have figured out the problem. First I must say that I know absolutely NOTHING about all the wires hanging from poles in the neighborhoods throughout the city. I have NO IDEA what they are for, but I can imagine.

I noticed there are a couple of loops on these lines.

Here's a closeup of what the two loops look like:

My theory is that if your phone call is the unlucky one that gets sent across this line, you will get shuttled between these two loops. Forever. Just hang up and try again. And hopefully you'll end up on a straight line this time.

Another thing: Have you seen how these lines are fixed? This one seems to be held together with black packing tape-- which is something I've been known to use around the house -- in a pinch.....

And this really looks like the way I'd fix it. When you can't find the duct tape, use an old belt!
